California, 1881.A new sheriff  is on his way to the little town of San Juan Capistrano. Also on the train is Professor Phineas T. Mack, a trickster in search of people he can rip off with his ‘three-card Monte’.  At the same time, Dan Belford, the local cannery owner returns from a business trip with a new employee, Oliver Sudden.
