It’s wintertime in a village on the Bog of Cats. Hester Swane, abandoned at the age of eight by her mysterious vagrant mother Big Josie, has spent all her life waiting in vain for her to return. And now Hester has also lost her lover Carthage Kilbride, father of her little daughter, to a younger woman, Caroline. Their wedding reception, for all its whimsical characters and hilarious speeches, suddenly becomes a scene of bitter reckoning when Hester Swane appears, fiercely determined to rebel against her fate.
